Many gardeners prefer to plant Cherriet radishes in their plots, as this is a very early variety suitable for year-round cultivation. This root crop is also in high demand due to its high taste and rich yield.
Radish Cherryet
Radish Cherriet belongs to the early varieties
Radish Cherryet is not susceptible to pest attack
Description of the variety
Radish Cherriet is a hybrid obtained by crossing the species of the first generations. Japanese specialists were engaged in root selection in 2000. The result of the work of breeders is the high characteristics of the vegetable.
Plant appearance
Cherryet radish is easy to distinguish from other varieties of this vegetable, as it has a characteristic appearance:
- The root vegetable is red in color, has a round shape with a slightly protruding head.
- The root system is pivotal, rather long, and has a white color.
- Radish leaves are shaped like an egg. The color of the tops is light green. The tops are low, do not grow on the sides, so you can plant a large amount of radish even in a small summer cottage.
- Petiole leaf has a purple hue.
Fruit characteristics
Cherriet radish has the following characteristics:
- The root crop is small - only 3-4 cm.
- The weight of a vegetable on average varies between 25-30 g. Sometimes larger fruits are also found - about 45 g.
- Radish pulp is whitish. The consistency is delicate, and the taste is slightly spicy. Thanks to such taste data, the root crop is actively used in cooking, especially for preparing cold snacks.
Yield
Cherriet is a very early variety. Already 20-25 days after the appearance of the first shoots, you can get up to 3 kg of vegetables from 1 sq. m.
Pros and cons
The main plus of the vegetable is its useful composition, which includes:
- Silicon. This element is contained in root crops in large quantities. It is very important for maintaining normal muscle tone.
- Anthocyanin. It is a plant pigment. It is useful for people with heart disease. Anthocyanin is also an antiseptic, able to stop bleeding and even prevent cancers in the intestines.
- Cellulose. It helps to remove any toxins from the body and burn the accumulated excess fat, therefore Cherryet radish is used with a diet.
- Protein. It is beneficial for people with diabetes.
Not only a useful composition is popular radish Cherriet. The positive aspects of the vegetable also include:
- early yield;
- root crops all grow the same size and weight;
- inside the radish has no voids, even if the sowing and watering technology has been violated;
- grows in any climate;
- resistant to small spring and night frosts;
- not subject to attack by pests;
- well transported over long distances.
The Cherriet variety has only one minor drawback - you will need to buy planting material every year.
Features and rules of cultivation
Cherriet radish is grown in a greenhouse and outdoors. Each method has its own characteristics and rules, following which they get a high-quality harvest.
In the greenhouse
Cherriet radish can produce good results in greenhouse conditions. But remember that with this method, the vegetable receives less sunlight than it needs, and the ripening process increases.
You can increase the yield in the greenhouse by placing an additional heat source in it. For this purpose, several fluorescent lamps are suitable.
When growing radishes in a greenhouse, try not to thicken the crops when planting. As soon as shoots have appeared, set the temperature in the range from + 5 to + 10˚С. Then wait for the fruit to form and increase the temperature to + 16-18˚С if the days are cloudy and rainy. And if the weather is warm - from +12 to + 14˚С, and do not forget to regularly ventilate the greenhouse. Vegetables require not only light, but also fresh air.
In the open ground
Since radish tolerates frosts well, it can be sown in open ground, even when the air temperature drops to –3 ° C. Root seedlings tolerate temperature drops down to –6˚С. It is best to start sowing in warm weather when the thermometer does not drop (at a temperature of + 12-16 degrees).
In order to have a larger yield in open ground, cover the newly planted seeds with a film. It is allowed to remove material only after the appearance of the first shoots.
Sowing seeds
A healthy and large crop of Cherriet is easy to get. To do this, follow the rules of sowing seeds.
Timing
Radishes grown in the greenhouse can be sown at any time approximately every 2-3 weeks.
If the radish is cultivated in open ground, sowing begins already in late March - early April, as soon as warm weather is established. Planted in open ground Cherriet until September.
Site selection and preparation
Choose a place for beds on the south or south-west side of the site so that the sun's rays fall on the beds throughout the day.
It is necessary to prepare the soil for sowing Cherrieta in the open field in the fall. Dig up the soil in September and check the acidity - it must be neutral, otherwise the crop will get sick with keel. If the soil is far from the expected norms, carry out the liming procedure. It will require peat mixed with sand. This mixture softens the earth, making it looser.
Radish is very picky about soil nutrition. Apply stale manure or compost before digging. You can additionally sprinkle fertilizers that contain phosphorus and potassium.
You can prepare the soil in a greenhouse at any time.
Crop rotation rules
A crop rotation done according to the rules leads to a successful harvest. Remember: it is useful to grow radish in place of nightshade and legume crops. But on the beds where cabbage, rice, mustard, rutabaga grew, it is better not to sow the seeds of Cririet.
Landing scheme
For greenhouse and soil cultivation, adhere to the following radish planting technology:
- Step 1 - to plow the land. The distance between the rows is about 15 cm.
- Step 2 - form holes with a depth of 1.5 to 2 cm.
- Step 3 - Water each well abundantly.
- Step 4 - place seeds in each well. There should be about 4 cm between each seed.
- Step 5 - sprinkle the resulting hole with earth. Try not to tamp the soil.
If the soil is rough, plant the seed in the holes with a depth of not more than 1 cm.
Cherriet Radish Care
It's easy to take care of radishes. But care must be thorough, according to the requirements of the plant.
Watering
Water the crop as needed, as soon as you notice that the ground is slightly dry. Do not allow acidification of the soil, otherwise the tubers will turn out watery. But it is not worth overdrying the soil too much - the radish will taste bitter.
If the weather is cloudy or rainy, irrigate the beds once a week. On hot days, water the vegetable daily. In the greenhouse, also water the radishes as needed, but with a little warm water.
Fertilization
The future harvest of cherry radish needs to be fertilized. But this process is simple, since it occurs only once during the entire growing season - 7-10 days after germination.
To do this, take fertilizers from phosphorus and potassium. Chicken droppings will do. Soak fertilizers, dilute with water in a ratio of 1:10 and pour gently from a watering can between the rows.
Soil care
A healthy crop is also obtained through proper soil maintenance. Root crops require fresh air, so after watering, loosen the earth in each hole. Eliminate all weeds, as they take useful elements from the ground.
Soil mulching is also required in order to maintain a constant warm temperature and humidity level, especially if the seeds are planted in the season when there are frosts. For mulch, take a mixture of humus and compost.
Pest control
Despite the fact that radishes are not susceptible to attack by pests, a cruciferous flea can “put an eye” on the root crop. Since the variety is early, chemical compositions are not used to combat the pest. Better prepare folk mixtures:
- Take 1 tablespoon of vinegar and add it to 5 liters of water. Stir and spray the tops from all sides.
- Add 100 g of chopped tomato and garlic tops to 5 liters of water. Allow the mixture to brew for three hours. Then strain everything thoroughly and add 50 g of laundry soap. Spraying is carried out every five days.
- Take in equal proportions ash, pepper powder and tobacco. Mix ingredients and scatter over the beds.
The leaves of a root crop grown in a greenhouse can be struck by a white bloom - downy mildew. If you notice a whitish formation on a future crop, treat the tops with Fitosporin. To prevent illness, monitor the level of humidity - in a greenhouse should not be too damp.
Harvesting and storage
As already mentioned, a radish crop can be harvested in 20-25 days. But do not rush to pull the root crop out of the ground. Wait a little more than the due date, and in this case, the root crop will gain a large mass (more than 30 g), and the harvest will be of a higher quality. After removing the vegetable from the soil, cut the tops and remove the root system.
Harvested crops can be stored in the basement or in the refrigerator on the lower shelves for about a month. During this period, radish Cherriet does not lose its appearance and taste. Before storing, wash the tubers from dirt and dry them.
Reviews of vegetable growers
Igor, 46 years old. I wanted to grow radishes in my garden. In the store, they advised the variety Cherriet. Excellent radish! I was satisfied. Minimal care: dig up the ground with fertilizers and do not forget to water, and the harvest is good. The tubers are large, bright and juicy.
Catherine, 67 years old. I prefer Cherriet to all other varieties for many reasons. First, the ability to grow in a greenhouse. I plant this vegetable all year round. Secondly, easy maintenance. Thirdly, tubers with a special taste and have no voids inside.
Lyudmila, 53 years old. I have been growing Cherriet radishes at my dacha for several years in a row, and it does not bother me. Caring for a vegetable is easy. During this time, I tried cultivation in the open field, as well as in a greenhouse. I liked the last option better, since the root crop pleases the whole family all year round.
